Is MBBS Abroad Valid in India?
Yes, a foreign primary medical qualification can support a registration pathway in India, but only when the student satisfies the rules that apply to the admission date, programme, internship, licensing examination and compulsory internship in India.

Quick answer
MBBS abroad is not automatically valid or invalid in India merely because of the country, university name or a World Directory of Medical Schools listing. For an Indian citizen or OCI candidate, the registration pathway depends on whether the student met the applicable Indian eligibility conditions before admission and whether the exact foreign programme, clinical training and internship satisfy the National Medical Commission rules.
After obtaining the foreign qualification, the graduate must also complete the examination, provisional registration, compulsory rotating medical internship and permanent-registration steps applicable at that time. The National Medical Commission currently states that foreign undergraduate medical qualifications are governed by the FMGL Regulations 2021, the Screening Test Regulations 2002 and the foreign-admission eligibility regulations, as applicable.
What does “valid in India” actually mean?
Families often use the word “valid” to describe several different checks. These checks should be separated because passing one does not prove the others.
Is the university legally authorised?
Confirm the institution’s legal name, degree-awarding authority and current authorisation from the competent authority in its home country. Marketing names and agent brochures are not enough.
Does the exact course meet the rules?
Verify the duration, subjects, teaching language, clinical locations, internship and licensing eligibility for the precise campus and intake. A university may offer more than one programme with different conditions.
Did the student complete every requirement?
The student must preserve attendance, examination, clinical-rotation and internship records and obtain the qualification and licence eligibility required by the applicable rules.
Can the graduate obtain registration?
The graduate must complete the examination, supervised internship and State Medical Council registration process applicable after returning to India.
The registration pathway for an Indian student
| Stage | What the student should verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Before admission | Applicable NEET and Indian eligibility requirements; legal university; exact programme; duration; language; internship; local licence eligibility. | A weak programme cannot be repaired merely by passing an examination after graduation. |
| During the course | Physical attendance, required subjects, hands-on clinical training, patient communication, approved clinical sites and complete records. | Regulators may require evidence that training was completed in the required format and location. |
| Foreign internship | Required length, hands-on rotations, same institution and host-country rules for the candidate’s admission date. | The internship is a separate regulatory condition, not simply part of an advertised course duration. |
| After graduation | Degree, transcripts, internship evidence, apostille or legalisation where needed, local registration or licence eligibility and required examination documentation. | Incomplete or inconsistent documents can delay eligibility and registration processing. |
| Return to India | Current NBEMS/NMC examination route, State Medical Council provisional registration, CRMI allocation and permanent registration. | Graduation abroad does not itself authorise independent medical practice in India. |
Core FMGL requirements for students admitted after 18 November 2021
The Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 introduced programme-level conditions for candidates covered by those regulations. Read the regulation and current NMC clarifications in full; the points below are a planning summary rather than a substitute for the official text.
- Minimum medical course duration: the foreign medical course must meet the prescribed duration and subject requirements. The regulations describe a minimum course period of 54 months.
- Foreign internship: the regulations require a minimum 12-month internship at the same foreign medical institution, with hands-on clinical training in the required subjects.
- English medium: the medium of instruction must meet the regulation. Families must also investigate the language used with patients during clinical work.
- Required subjects and clinical training: the curriculum and internship must be comparable with the requirements described by NMC and include the specified clinical subjects.
- Same institution and country: the entire course, training and internship or clerkship must comply with the location and institution conditions. Split-country or transferred clinical training should be treated as a major warning until verified in writing.
- Licence eligibility abroad: the qualification must make the graduate eligible for registration or a licence to practise medicine in the country where the qualification is awarded, at par with a citizen of that country, subject to the regulation.
- Completion period: NMC’s FMGL clarification states that the foreign medical graduation course must be completed within ten years from joining.
- Indian requirements: the graduate must complete the mandated examination and supervised internship or CRMI process in India before permanent registration, as applicable.
Students admitted on or before 18 November 2021 may fall under different transitional or earlier provisions. Admission date matters, so do not use a generic social-media checklist to decide an individual case.
Is NEET required for MBBS abroad?
Indian citizens and OCI candidates who take admission in a foreign undergraduate medical course and intend to follow the Indian registration pathway must satisfy the applicable NEET requirement. NMC states that for the relevant admission periods, a qualifying NEET result is treated as the eligibility certificate when the other prescribed eligibility conditions are met.
A NEET score does not approve a foreign university or guarantee future registration. It addresses the candidate’s Indian admission eligibility. Students should begin with the MBBS abroad after NEET guide and retain the scorecard and admission-year records.
Does WDOMS listing mean NMC approval?
No. The World Directory of Medical Schools is a directory. A listing can help confirm that a school is recorded in the directory, but it is not an NMC approval, endorsement or guarantee that a particular programme meets Indian registration rules.
NMC does not publish a blanket list that makes every programme at a named foreign institution automatically suitable. Check the legal institution and exact programme against the foreign medical university verification checklist. Be cautious whenever a brochure uses “WHO approved” or “NMC approved” as the complete answer.
FMGE, internship and registration in India
NMC’s current information page states that Indian and OCI candidates with foreign undergraduate medical qualifications are required to qualify the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination conducted by NBEMS. After qualifying, the candidate approaches the relevant State Medical Council for provisional registration and completion of CRMI, as applicable, and may then apply for permanent registration.
The rules or examination route applicable at the time of graduation can change. A student starting a long medical programme should therefore understand the current pathway without assuming that the same examination name or procedure will remain unchanged years later.
Twelve checks before paying an admission fee
Confirm the candidate’s eligibility
Check NEET, 10+2 subjects, marks, age and any intake-specific conditions using current official sources.
Confirm the legal university name
Match the offer letter, payment account, degree-awarding body and competent-authority records.
Verify the exact programme and campus
Do not rely on the university’s general reputation. Verify the named course, city, campus and intake.
Obtain the official curriculum
Review course duration, subjects, examinations, clinical rotations and academic calendar.
Check the internship separately
Ask where it occurs, who supervises it, how long it lasts and whether it is additional to the academic course.
Verify teaching and clinical language
English classroom instruction does not prove that students can communicate with patients during hospital rotations.
Check teaching hospitals
Request the names, locations and rotation arrangements of hospitals used by the programme.
Confirm local licence eligibility
Ask the competent authority what a foreign graduate must complete to become eligible for registration or a medical licence in that country.
Read the complete fee schedule
Separate tuition, hostel, food, insurance, visa, residence, examinations, internship and other charges. Use the full-course cost guide.
Check the payment destination
Pay only through an authorised channel that matches the written contract and provides a verifiable receipt.
Keep dated evidence
Save official webpages, regulations, curriculum, fee documents, correspondence and signed terms for the relevant intake.
Get unresolved points in writing
Verbal assurances about internship, licence eligibility, fees or clinical training should not control a multi-year decision.
Common warning signs
- A promise of guaranteed registration, FMGE success, visa approval or medical licence.
- “NMC approved” used without explaining the exact programme and applicable regulations.
- A 5-year package presented without a clearly additional 12-month foreign internship where required.
- Clinical training or internship planned in another institution or country without regulatory evidence.
- No written proof of eligibility for registration or licence in the degree-awarding country.
- English-medium advertising that ignores the language used with patients.
- Fees requested in cash or to an unrelated personal account.
- A brochure that refuses to identify the degree-awarding institution or precise campus.
- Pressure to pay before the family receives the curriculum, fee schedule and refund conditions.
Does the country decide validity?
No country label makes every university suitable. Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia and other destinations have different institutions, programmes, hospitals, language environments and licensing procedures. Validity must be checked at programme and student level.
Use the best country for MBBS abroad comparison to narrow the environment, then review each named university separately. Students considering current options can also read the detailed Russia, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan guides.
Frequently asked questions
Is an MBBS degree from abroad recognised in India?
A foreign primary medical qualification can lead to registration in India when the student satisfies the eligibility, programme, examination, internship and registration requirements applicable to the admission date and circumstances. The university name alone does not decide the outcome.
Which countries’ MBBS degrees are valid in India?
NMC rules apply to the candidate and exact foreign programme. Do not treat a whole country as approved. Verify the legal institution, duration, curriculum, internship, clinical training, teaching language and local licence eligibility.
Does WDOMS listing make a university NMC approved?
No. WDOMS is a directory and its listing is not an NMC approval or guarantee of eligibility for registration in India.
Is FMGE required after MBBS abroad?
NMC’s current guidance states that Indian and OCI candidates with foreign undergraduate medical qualifications must qualify the FMG Examination conducted by NBEMS, followed by the applicable provisional-registration and CRMI process. Students should recheck the rule in force when they graduate.
Can internship be completed in another country?
Students covered by FMGL 2021 should carefully follow the same-institution and country conditions stated in the regulations and clarifications. Do not accept a split-country arrangement without current written regulatory evidence.
Can a consultant guarantee registration in India?
No responsible consultant can guarantee a future regulatory decision. A consultant can help collect evidence and explain the process, while the student remains responsible for meeting academic and regulatory requirements.
